Next step, before leaving Seattle, was to move the piano somewhere else and see how it worked, and to find out what it was like to have other pianists play it for the first time. Part of the point is to have the musicians sit down to play without any idea of what it will sound like. So I set up a casual Monday night at The Royal Room, dragged the piano over there, and asked some of my favorite pianists to play something.
The Royal Room has a regular series called “Piano Starts Here”, which features local pianists playing the music of great jazz composers (i.e. Ellington, Bill Evans, Monk etc.) on the Royal Room’s Steinway B.
For this version, given the change in instrument, I called it “Piano Ends Here”. We had a lot of fun. I picked four performances, edited, to include in this video. The pianists are Dawn Clement, Andrew Olmstead, Robin Holcomb and Ryan Burns.
